So today I start this...

I've been researching diets a lot lately. My workouts have been lackluster due to injury and life and my weight loss has been seriously stunted because of it. Time for my food and way to dealing with it to get a kick in the pants.

This seems to be a healthier (or so it seems) spin on the Atkins diet. Basically - give up carbs and bad fats. Should be simple right? Or not at all. But this book seems to spell it out in a way that if dedicated enough is foolproof.

So I have 6 days of lean protein only. Meat, low fat cheese, and eggs. MMMMM. The only thing getting me through this is they guarantee a 5 pound weight loss in this 6 day period.

Have any of you tried this diet? Do you think the cover is a dirty liar and French people are skinny purely by their chic proximity to Paris?

I'm back from vacation and wishing I had just one more day to soak up doing nothing and being in the sun before heading back to the grind. I have tons of pictures and stories to post and share but now I'm going to be spending my last night laying on my couch and nursing one hell of a sunburn.

Stop Melting...

It's hot here. And by hot I mean I could melt - it hitting 100 everyday and not stop rising there is killing me. The only thing worth doing is sitting in the pool or eating snow cones.

Unfortunately things like work and life get int the way of distracting myself from the heat. I'm having trouble getting dressed in the morning. How do you dress when the heat is strong enough to kill you?

This outfit is my idea of dreamy summer clothes but my trouble is coming in when it comes to dressing for work. How do you take outfits like this and make them work appropriate?

I have been packing my lunch for the past few days trying to get back into the swing of my diet. This is what my lunches should look like. Vibrant, fresh and healthy. Instead while it consistest of the same ingredients it looks boring, plain and tiresome.

A few of you know that I started a new job not long ago. Since jumping into it I have worked days that have put me in a perpetual zombie state. Lots of stress, lots of time and lots of lost sleep.

To top off what has been a stressful week I actually got called "Stupid" repeatedly by a potential patron in an attempt to bully me into giving them what they wanted when it was physically impossible for me to do so. There is only so much magic in these fingers and brain of mine. All I could think was "What the hell do you expect to get from me talking like that?" Truth is nothing. Any thought of me bending over backwards rushed out of my body and all I wanted to do was hang up and go home.

End rant - just remember when you deal with people selling you a service, especially a specialty service like I do (as in hotels, the arts, and entertainment services) remember that we all want to give you exactly what you want. Calling us Stupid will make us want to hang up. NOT that any of my fab readers would call anyone stupid!

I can not believe that I have 1 more day left of the 30 Day Shred. It seems like a miracle - it took more like 90 days to get through but hell it's done and if I never ever have to see Jillian Michaels face again I will be so happy.

I think I'm happy with the results. I am definitely more in shape but I'm no longer really excited about the progress I've seen. My weight has stayed relatively the same and in light of that I am going to seriously buckle down and get onto this half marathon training.

Thanks for sticking in and waiting around for me to get back to blogging. Regularly scheduled programing should be up and running around here on Monday!

Workin' A Desk

I'm now working a job that lets me dress nearly anyway I want - only exceptions no denim bottoms and no spaghetti strap tops. Um okay - deal.

I Have The Urge To Chop

Chop of my hair that is. I have spent 2 years growing out my hair because I for the 2 years before that had ridiculously short hair. In those two years my hair has only grown an inch or two past my shoulder's - I wish I had pictures for you but I'm a bad blogger and that's just not happening.

So back to chopping. I saw little miss Dianna Agron cut her hair into this adorable haircut last week and all I can think about is finding a pair of scissors.

Remember way back a month ago when some girls and I started #shredcrew and were busting out the 30 Day Shred? Well apparently a few of us have gone way work out crazy and have added training for a half marathon to the mix.

In October I will be running one with Meghan from Little Girl In The Big World and am in the talks of running on with Kristin from Skinny Jeans & A Chai Latte in November.

Yes, I have become running crazy. Big time training for the races will start the first week of June but I'm already thinking of ways to help me stay on path and motivated. Number one - getting a killer pair of running shoes.

These have caught my eye and I am trying to track down somewhere to try them on. Have you ever worn Adidas running shoes? If not what kind of shoes do you work out in?

Wanderlust & Lipstick - Passport to Africa

AAAAAND we're back. Kind of. W&L took a bit of a break while things got all crazy here in my real world but Meghan has come to save the day. Check her out, show some love and I'll be back soon. Thanks for sticking with me.

Hi guys. Meghan here from little girl in the big world. I made my first trip abroad when I was in 8th grade, and my parents let me plan the whole thing aside from hotel and flights. It gave me my first taste at what was possible in a foreign city. While it was only London, it was exciting for me as an 8th grader to get to take on that responsibility.

Since then, I've travelled abroad quite a bit. I studied abroad at Oxford and made weekend trips with another girlfriend several weekends we were there, and I've been to Africa twice. All of these experiences have really given me an understanding of what is important to think about when traveling internationally. I want to share with you some things that I've found to be important along the way. I'm not an expert, and my way is not the only one, but if you're thinking of going somewhere abroad, make sure to do your fair share of research.

Kayla wanted me to focus on my experience traveling to Africa to give that perspective when going abroad, but before jumping into that I do want to tell those of you looking to "do Europe" on a budget, it's totally doable without staying in hostels and eating fast food.

A few quick Europe tips:

a. use ryanair and easyjet to get SUPER cheap flights within the country. They are definitely no frills airlines, but they'll get you to your city of choice (although usually not the main airport...you'll have to use some public transportation).

b. look up hostals. They're a mix between hotels and hostels. You have your own room with locking doors, but you sometimes share a bathroom. My experiences differed. In Barcelona I had the most amazing room with a balcony and shared a marble bathroom that locked with almost no one. In Paris I ended up getting a hotel room (for the same price because I had made a reservation) because they were out of the hostal rooms, and in Rome my friend and I had our own bathroom. Overall, amazing prices with not one negative experience.

Anyways, on to Africa. My favorite continent in the whole world, although Asia is next on my list. You've got to plan before you go. I went to Ghana twice and stayed quickly on one trip in Ethiopia (long story). Both times I was with groups, so most of the planning was done for me, but there was still a lot to think about.

a. Don't go to Africa without plans. It isn't like Europe where you can backpack around and find a place to stay on a whim. I promise you want to know what you're doing before you go.

b. You cannot go to any African country without a travel visa. These need to be applied for several months in advance. You cannot board your flight without one; they will literally stop you--I saw it happen. Just go online to the embassy of your country to find out how to do so. It normally costs $40-$70.

c. Check the US government website for recommended vaccinations. You must have yellow fever for almost everywhere in Africa, and that shot can be hard to find and expensive. It lasts for 10 years, though, so it's good for a long time. I ended up getting 5 shots for my first trip, but because I went only 5 years later the second time, I only needed two new shots.

d. Ask your travel clinic for the "traveler's pill". I promise you'll want it in case you east something bad and can't control you bathroom habits (sorry if that's TMI, but I promise you'll want it).

e. Get the Malarone malaria pills. The other pills will give you strange dreams and negative side effects. And take those pills. On my first trip four people still got malaria, but the medicine makes the illness shorter with less effects.

f. Read online to find out if the water will be safe to drink or use to brush your teeth. If not, bring extra money to buy bottled water. Don't eat cut up fruit from the side of the road. You'll want to, and it will look good, but buy fruit and cut it up yourself.

g. Go Exploring! The markets and public transportation are so much fun. And bargain, bargain, bargain. On my first trip I went with a mix of white and black people, and they could tell that every one of us was from America, even when not together. They will try to rip you off since you're from America. Drive a really hard bargain. You won't want to pay more than 1/4 of their initial offer.

h. Have fun! It's an amazing experience, and take LOTS of pictures...even of things you don't think you'll care about later. There are so many things I wish I had taken pictures of to have for reference.

Pardon The Interuption

I am taking a break from blogging to pull my hair out. On my way home from embarking in the set up for an opening of a new shoe store - which can sound exciting except it involved moved 500 boxes filled with over 1000 pairs of shoes around in 90 degree Texas humidity - my car decided to die on me.

Upon further inspection it was determined that the car is beyond repair. Um hello stress... where have you been? I knew it was too long since we had a love affair.

So while I go into spontaneous fits of tears and laughter and prepare myself to move around more shoes I will be taking a little break from blogging.

When I return be prepared to hear about this exciting new shoe store, more Wanderlust and Lipstick and hopefully a story about how I won the lottery and bought a new car.

I think professionally it's more of a mix of people. Former bosses and professors who encouraged me and talked me up to people for jobs when I probably didn't have the experience to really get them on my own. People who had faith I could succeed before I even could.

There have been lots of challenges. My biggest one lately has been learning to ignore the trash talk when it comes to my Wanderlust & Lipstick series. I don't know what I did to offend and upset so many people with my concept of girls can do whatever they want including traveling alone attitude but somewhere along the way I upset lots of people. Learning to understand I'll never please everyone and I can do more than simply create outfits if I want too is kinda empowering.

Weekend Wear

Along with my Spring Trends I mentioned yesterday I should have added neon. I'm obsessed. My first venture into it was actually just a sports bra but I couldn't resist. Who said sports bras had to be boring? I'm more likely to workout if I wanna wear the workout clothes.

I ordered this Splendid tank a while ago and haven't really worn it. I wore it once with jeans and high heels lots of jewelry and loved it but it quickly - very quickly - became too hot for jeans here so it has sat unworn. Sad face. I'm on the hunt for a skirt like this. Perfect way to add my neon tank to a neutral but interesting skirt.

This week it's only one question with 5 answers. Top 5 Spring trends - I have been horrible at keeping up with up the actual trends with Spring so I am just going to name the 5 things that I want to incorporate into my wardrobe.

What are the top 5 Spring trends that you are looking forward to seeing/sporting this season?

1. Wedges - I'm obsessed. Always have been. I have already gotten tons of wear out of my TOM'S wedges so far this Spring. Colored ones have been really catching my eyes and I realized I don't really have any. I could use a couple pairs - like these red ones.

2. Pink Lips - any by pink I mean really really pink. That color that almost catches you off guard and looks strange but when you really look at it looks gorgeous, colorful and offbeat. I haven't found the perfect lipstick yet but I'm not giving up.

3. Color Blocking - I need more colored bottoms in my life. Skirts and shorts especially. It's something I have wanted to incorporate into my wardrobe for a long time. Spring and it's warm weather seems like a good place to start. Keiko has the best example I've seen yet.

4 & 5. Beach Hair and Sunglasses - My hair is finally long enough to play with beach waves. It's taken almost 2 years to grow my hair out but I think it's gonna be worth it. I think it might take me a while to remember how to do the whole look I'm messy and I don't care but I really spent 20 minutes doing my hair thing. Sunglasses and I are best friends. I have light eyes and bad vision - this leads to being incredibly sensitive eyes. I finally get to not look like that crazy fool wearing sunglasses in on a gloomy winter day.

New Obsession - Elle Decor

Since joining the blogging world I have grown more and more intrigued with interiors. I used to just be concerned with my room, my home, my space but now I am that ~~creepy~~ blogger that wants to see inside other people's homes and spaces.

Enter Elle Decor. I have been cruising their website for the past month or so and after much searching in my little town I have found that no store sells the magazine. There was nothing else to do but get a subscription - which logically I should have done in the first place but I feared my mail man would hate me for adding another magazine for him to stuff into that tiny mail box I have.

4 - 6 weeks seems like forever to wait till I get my first issue. Till then I am just gonna have to keep cruising the website for things like this...

1. Guest posts are a good way to gain new exposure. What do you think is the appropriate way to go about securing a guest spot?
I have never approached another blog about doing a guest post. It'd be a strange concept to think about approaching asking someone if I can write for them. I also have a hard enough time keeping up with my own blog and making sure I read all of the ones I love so much that unless asked to participate on someone else's it's just not a priority.
2. Leaving comments is essential to growing your blog. But how can you leave a comment without coming across as ‘Follow Me. Follow Me!’?
Unless I am telling someone specifically that I am happy I found their blog and am a new follower I generally just follow if I want and leave comments that pertain to the post with my blog link included in the comment. As much as I'd love too I just don't do the "if you follow me I'll follow you" I just can't. I'd be following hundreds of blogs. I love my followers and answer every comment as it comes in order to build reader relationships and follow as many as I can handle.
3. We've all gotten a mass email at one time or another asking for blog exposure, a link exchange, etc… But the mass emails don’t work. How do you make your email stand out from the crowd?
For sponsorships and things of that nature I tend to only approach companies and blogs I have some sort of relationship whether it be I have read their blogs, hosted a giveaway for them or shopped with them before. I haven't delved much into the world of link exchanges or specific blog exposure posts.
4. In interacting with other bloggers where do you draw the line between seeking support and begging for exposure?
The more I am reading these questions the more I'm realize I don't really do a whole lot of exposure seeking. Am I behind the times or what?
5. What’s one rule of engagement error you made and how have you remedied that?
Initially in getting into the world of sponsorship I had no idea how to approach people to work with me and I just went with it. I still don't really know how too. But I have learned that not overwhelming them with information while providing a link to where they can get all of the info is helpful. They take the time to read through your email without having to skim because it's long and tedious.

Wanderlust & Lipstick - Going From Tacky Tourist To Pubbin' With The Locals

Are you loving Wanderlust & Lipstick yet? I am loving the reaction from all you ladies. This weeks guest post is from Megan over at A Suitcase and Stilettos (how great is that name -~~almost~~ better than Wanderlust & Lipstick) She's telling us all about her recent trip to Ireland and I'm so jealous I'm practically packing my suitcase.

I have always been one that frowned upon visiting a place in the fashion of a “tacky tourist”. True, I have been guilty of this many of times, but I desperately try to visit a place and get a true sense of the place in the life of a local. Unfortunately, the people I often travel with are intrigued by the places flooded with wanderers with cameras hanging around their neck and wearing a t-shirt with the name of the city they are currently visiting. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am by no means saying to shun these touristy sights. I mean, after all, they are often the views and mental pictures that are engrained in your head before you even travel to the place…but what I am saying is that you can have the best of both worlds.

I just got back from Dublin, Ireland. Only being there for a few days, and feeling sick most of the time, I decided to stick around the city, and not venture out to the countryside (I know what you’re thinking… but this may or may not be my first time in Ireland). My vacation started with my boyfriend (who lives in Norway), and boy did I know what our plans would entail. We totally were going to hit up all the big “sights” around the city. We would visit the Guinness Storehouse, cathedrals, etc. I had no problems with it, but it did compel me to leave a day later than him…just so I could see the city in the eyes of someone who lives there. So, I did…I booked my ticket to depart the city a day later than him (and it saved me astounding amounts of money).

True, much of my day spent alone was perusing Dublin to try to find a pub I could watch the Virginia Commonwealth University vs. Kansas University game at… BUT, while I did this, I learned the city, and not the parts I have seen photographs of or had seen days prior with my boyfriend. I even had a traditional Irish breakfast (sans tomatoes because I don’t like them) at a local café filled with Dubliners. But, my day really took off when I had a craving for a Smithwick’s (I already had my fill of Guinness throughout the trip). Unsuccessful attempts of finding a pub that would show my basketball game had consumed part of my day, so I wandered into a random pub with only one mission: BEER. Little did I know, this pub would be where I spent most of my night.

Walking into the pub, I found two older Irishmen who were watching a Rugby match. I joined in, attempting to look like I was just another fan of the sport. Of course, when I ordered my first beer, my accent screamed “AMERICAN”, and not a local Irish gal. The bar filled up to at least ten more people throughout the night, and I had an array of 6 people buy me beers (ladies too…I am almost convinced there is no such thing as an unfriendly Irish person!). The bar had one decent sized TV, and the entire bar agreed to put on the VCU vs. KU game for me. WHAT?!? These locals were going to forego a rugby match to turn on American basketball for me?! And they were excited about it, cheering every time VCU scored and being completely engaged in the game and jumping up when VCU won at the end. One guy even had his daughter and son come in to the bar with a candy bar for me called a “Curlywurly”. Apparently, he had sent them out to find me this candy bar because he insisted NO one should leave Ireland without trying this traditional Irish candy bar.

Dublin has won over my heart. And it has nothing to do with the city itself, it is all about the people. I learned more about the country, city, and its culture over a beer with a few locals than I did strolling the cities with a camera in hand reading a map of Dublin.

Wednesday Wishlist

After thinking so much about how I want my style to change and evolve as I work on changing up my diet and work out routine and getting utterly overwhelmed I decided to simply start a wishlist of pieces that catch my eye and then when I'm ready to buy things I can go back through and weed out the thing that no longer fit my style.

Top of my list is a paperbag waist skirt. TopShop has some great options but this mustard yellow number calls my name. Options and ways to wear it seem endless but I'm pretty simple - pair it with a white tank, light scarf and some high leather wedges maybe some bangles for some added accessories then call it a day.

Welcome Spring

Spring in Texas pretty much means Summer except the nights get kinda chilly. High 80's and low 90's days with nights down to the high 50's. It's not the easiest weather to dress for.

I'm going to be kicking off my Spring/Summer concert life this coming weekend and I'm on the hunt for the perfect outfit balance. My wardrobe is pretty empty right now. Clothes that are now too big thanks to diet and the Shred and clothes that are still too small that I kept in the vain hope I get back down there to that size. In the mean time I am looking for cheap cheap and cheaper outfits to get me through at least the next 30 days when I'm willing to throw down a little moolah.

In an ideal world I would find a cheap version of this outfit.

So where do you go for cute clothes on the cheap? Keep in mind I live in a small town and most of what I get is a drive or bought on the internet!

Getting This Butt In Gear

Thanks for all the support for myself and all the other bloggers doing the 30 Day Shred. We're all still kicking ass and taking names.

Of course it's only 6 (or is this 5?) days in and a few of us took Saturday off - I think the other just did the Shred Saturday to make the rest of us look bad.

One thing I have learned from adding the Couch to 5K to my 30 Day Shred is that I may have a person who enjoys running deep down in there. Trust me - this is quite shocking. I've always been an active semi-inshape person but running was not something I enjoyed. I played pick up tennis or volleyball games with friends, hiked, swam, took tons of boot camp classes at the gym but running never called to me.

Now I just need to work my booty off and get confident to run in something like this - instead of my old high school athletic t-shirts and sweats.

Also I need some good motivational running tunes. Leave your suggestions!

Wanderlust & Lipstick - Watch What You Read

Guest blogger number 2 in the Wanderlust & Lipstick series is Michelle from I Want To Unfold. We have become fast friends bonding over music, travel and an ability to chat about self esteem being part of human nature for longer than necessary. She'll be popping up again later in the series but she's sharing our first misadventure story from the road first.

The vast majority of my travel has been on my own – to the point where the thought of traveling with someone else is actually what makes me panic. It initially wasn’t a conscious choice, simply a confluence of circumstances. I took no one I knew with me when I studied abroad – and that is, for rather obvious reasons, when I did most of my traveling.

I love being able to see exactly that I want to see without worrying about someone else. Some of my favorite travel memories involve passing the time in some quiet café, reading a book – or simply watching the world pass by.

I’ve also had more than my fair share of embarrassment and mishaps (although, thankfully, none severe). One of the most interesting traveling moments I ran into was actually not in a foreign country, but in the middle of Mississippi.

I was driving home, from Florida to Minnesota, via New Orleans. After leaving my friend in Louisiana, I began winding my way up the center of the country – never too far from the Mississippi River that ended its journey in New Orleans, but took some of its first steps less than a mile from my apartment in Minneapolis (okay – that’s artistic license. It actually starts its journey even further up, in north Minnesota).

The drive was going to take me two days. Mid-morning on the first day, my stomach began to rumble and I saw a sign for Cracker Barrel. Now, I wasn’t born and raised in the South, but these long Minnesota winter make me crave sweet tea and grits like crazy. The nearest Cracker Barrel is almost fifty miles away – and it’s staffed by Minnesotans. Bless their hearts, but it’s just not the same.

I took the exit, delighting in one last chance to enjoy a Southern breakfast. The restaurant was almost empty, so I was quickly settled into a corner, wrapping my hands around a hot cup of coffee and reading a book until the food arrived.

The only other people in the place were an adorable elderly couple sitting across the room. The waitress was intrigued by my party of one – she was full of questions about my journey. Wasn’t Minnesota mighty far away? Did my parents know I was doing this on my own? Wasn’t I scared? How did I know I wouldn’t get lost?

I felt incredibly lucky to come from circumstances where these questions either never occurred to me. I answered politely, expressed enthusiasm, and agreed that Minnesota winters sounded like a minor level in hell. She walked off shaking her head, but I felt that I’d made a good impression. When she refilled the elderly couple’s coffee cups, I could tell by the surprised looks they gave me that they, too, were unaccustomed to a woman traveling so far on her own.

However, I lost any ground I might have gained when she brought me my food. Noticing the tome of a book I was patiently working through, she asked what I was reading.

…

I am terrible at lying in general, but particularly when unexpectedly put on the spot (no matter how good an idea a little white lie might be in that moment). So I told her the truth.

“Oh, umm….it’s Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex.”

…

I got nothing but stunned silence in response. She quickly turned her back and walked away. When she next spoke with the elderly couple, I could almost hear her words – “Smut! In public! She should be ashamed…” The reproving glances they threw my way agreed.

Part of me wondered if I shouldn’t try to backtrack when she came with my bill – clarify that it was an important French feminist track – a key historical source in the women’s rights movement. Then I realize that (1) perhaps she already knew that and (2) that probably wouldn’t help my case.

I dutifully paid my bill and left, suddenly very eager to get out of Mississippi. But I learned several things that trip:

- Each additional copy of a map you bring with you on a road trip gives you slightly more peace of mind.

- They sell a three-patty Whopper value meal in Burger Kings in Arkansas. I think this has since migrated to the rest of the country, but it blew my mind at the time.

- You get a tingle down your spine every time you cross the Mississippi – even if you live in a city where you get to do it multiple times a day.

- But above all else – be careful what you read in a Mississippi restaurant. Or learn to master the little white lie. I feel both are essential tidbits for a woman traveling alone.

I am obsessed with hats. Apparently according to this set I am obsessed with straw fedoras. I did not realize I needed one so much until I looked at my picks and realized there were several listed. I may have to hop over to and get the one from Old Navy.

I searched for hats $30 or less. I wasn't extremely successful there are a few that squeaked by at under $50. Am I the only one who can't wrap my mind around spending a ton of money on a hat?

I'm handing the keys to the series over the Meghan this week to give you all the tricks she's found for finding the most affordable way to travel. She even taught me a few things. Hope you all are getting inspired and starting to get prepared for your first trip.
Hi! I'm Meghan from little girl in the big world. I'm thrilled to be guest posting for Kayla today. When she asked if people had travel tips, I jumped on it. I absolutely love to travel, and I love helping others! I've traveled to most places in the country and name Las Vegas, New York, and Chicago among my favorites in this country. Internationally, I've stamped my passport in several European and African countries. My favorite cities have been Rome, Paris, London, and Accra. I'm doing two posts for Kayla: one related to traveling on the cheap and the other on international travel tips.
I have great tips on style for a steal when traveling. I love staying in nice places, but I also love saving money.
My #1 tip to anyone is to use Priceline.com's name your own price feature. It truly works. Before you use it, though, determine where in the city you would like to stay. Priceline allows you to choose parts of the city, and that's your key to making sure you get to be where you want to be. Then, pick a star class that you want, and choose your price. They always try to scare you with what the average price a room is selling at, but don't be swayed...stick with your guns. Here are some of my best steals:
Atlanta's Intercontinental Hotel (Four Stars): ~~Retail: $297~~ Priceline: $75

Grand Hyatt Tampa (Four Stars): ~~Retail: $239~~ Priceline: $100

Hyatt Regency Chicago (Four Stars): ~~Retail: $209~~ Priceline: $75

The benefit of booking with priceline is that you get a great deal. The drawback is that you can't pick your exact hotel. You can pick the area, star rating, and price. Then, they see what they can do. If you don't get a match, you add one detail and try again. You can stay in four star hotels for two star prices with priceline.
Next, if you're going site-seeing in a city, do your research ahead of time on what types of discounts or deals museums and attractions have. *The Art Institute of Chicago has an $18 Admission but is free from 5-8 PM on Thursday nights.*NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art is $20 but can be $10 or free for students depending on the ID.*Las Vegas club entry fees can be outrageous, but if you're with an all girl group and find a promoter during the day, you can get in for free without a wait.
{Third}, stick with one airline for all of your flying, join their frequent flyer club, and get their airline rewards credit card (if you have the self-control to pay it off each month).

I put all my purchases on my airline rewards card instead of paying cash, pay off my purchases each month, and tend to get a free flight or two per year without paying interest or fees. Also, using frequent flyer programs when you fly can help you earn points even faster.
On the same note, fly on off-peak days. Tuesdays and Wednesday are by far the cheapest days to travel, with Mondays after noon, Thursdays before noon, and Saturdays coming in second. The most expensive days to travel are Thursday afternoons, Fridays, and Sundays because of business travelers.
A few other quick tips:-Use opentable.com to make dinner reservations and earn points to get rewards.-Compare the price as well as convenience of an airport shuttle service, a taxi, and public transportation (think if you care more about convenience or putting money towards something else)-Make your plans ahead on what you must see and what you can leave out. Once you're at your location you won't think about what you're spending.-Consider taking out enough cash (domestic travel only) to cover all discretionary spending. If you run out three days before you leave, you know what kind of spending you've been doing.

In other news I am slowly wading through all of my reader requests. I really appreciate them all and if you haven't had some sort of response for me about your request please send me another email.

I have quite a few asking for affordable Spring first date look. I am not one who thinks first dates should be overly extravagant. They are uncomfortable enough as it is without being uncomfortable in your clothes. Taking the steps to look a little more put together but still in the realm of your normal style is key. The guy is there to get to know you - going from black tie sophisticated to biker chick chic is a big leap for a guy to wrap his head around. Be you. If you feel pretty they'll think you're pretty.

I bet the majority of you had no idea this proud Texas girl was actually born in Alaska. North Pole, Alaska to be exact. That's right - the home of Santa. You have no idea how much I wish I had a scanner to post of pictures of little me in a huge snowsuit in front of the huge "Welcome to North Pole" Santa sign.

I have always kept little Alaska things around since moving. An Alaska charm on a charm bracelet, key chain, magnets on the fridge. Just one or two little things in my Texas pride filled life.

I think this may need to be added to my collection.

Power Stripes

I love a good stripe. I mean I LOVE a striped anything. I have about 4 navy and white long sleeve Parisian style shirts in my closet because I had a fear that they wouldn't be in style next year and I won't be able to find them again.

1. When it comes to prioritizing your life, in what place does blogging fall?
Pretty high. I can't really imagine my life without it at this point. The community, the ability to share; it all seems to impact my daily life in bigger ways than I ever imagined. I still can't believe it's been less than a year since I jumped into it.
2. We all wish we had more free time to dedicate to blogging and all it entails. What are your tricks for taking advantage of the time you do have to be as productive as possible?
I'm a huge advocate of setting up automatic posts. I try to have a entire week ready to publish by Sunday night. It not only gives me time to go back and perfect/tweek my posts, it lets me concentrate more on responding to comments and reading/finding other blogs I enjoy.
3. Have you discovered any short-cuts that makes blogging easier or more time efficient?
Again I think this is all about setting up posts ahead of time. I'm also an obsessive note-taker and book-marker of things I find online. It's probably a problem. I've recently taken to using Tumblr and Pintrest to keep track of everything. I am now addicted.
4. Do you have an editorial calendar or something similar that helps you plan ahead?
I'm really trying to get on a stricter schedule. Writing about certain things certain days of the week, but it hasn't really worked out. It's a work in progress.
5. If time wasn’t an issue what you would be doing on your blog/for your blog that you aren’t doing now?
More things about my life. Outfit posts, pictures of when I'm out and about, and things of that nature. I would also try and do more guest posting and have more guest posters. I enjoy the creative collaboration with other bloggers so much!

Wanderlust & Lipstick - Tips To Get You Started

Traveling solo can be intimidating. Some people simply feel being alone with yourself can seem lonely and awkward. Add in the challenge of navigating a random place and the whole experience can seem overwhelming.

These are a few things I think you can do to get adjusted to being alone... in your town:

1. Enjoy your own company. Unplug, keep the radio and TV off no internet for a day. This will get you used to being in your own head, a great skill to learn when you’re traveling on your own.

2. Leave your workplace and have lunch by yourself, tomorrow.

3. Leave the friends at home and go shopping by yourself. Maybe you'll find as I did that I really prefer to shop this way.

4. Go to the library or bookstore and spend an hour examining travel books and magazines.

5. Try starting light conversations with someone you would never normally talk to—a Starbucks barista, the cashier at Target, the person next to you at a bar while your friends in the bathroom. Anyone.

6. Next time you have a free evening alone, treat yourself to a movie or a new restaurant. Try something completely different that your friends or family may not be interested in. Search the internet and newspaper to find some unique areas to explore in your own home town.

7. Next time you travel with someone, schedule some time on your own. Go for a hike, take a walk on the beach, grab a meal by yourself or have a coffee and read the latest issue of Vogue.

8. Make time for yourself. Does your husband, significant other, or roommate work long hours and weekends? Take advantage of a busy time in their lives by doing something solo.

9. Take an overnight trip to someplace close to home. Hit a spa, a show, or just stay in a hotel and see a movie. You’ll feel like you’ve conquered the world!

10. Invite yourself to visit a friend who lives in another city or state. Make it an overnight trip or a weekend in which your friends, family or significant other stays home. This will help get you used to making the journey by yourself, and that’s a big step.

Most importantly give yourself permission to be more independent. Simple things like the ideas above can be the first step in grand adventures.

I went to see The Adjustment Bureau - I highly recommend it - and couldn't help but stare at Emily Blunt's clothes the entire time. I have always thought she was gorgeous but it wasn't until this movie that I really am starting to develop a major style crush.

I love the idea of not having a pre-fab headboard. For a long time I wanted to make one our of pvc pipe and a ton of fabric. I know it sounds weird but in my mind it's fabulous. Trust me.

Now I may need to seriously consider perusing through flea markets and antique stores to make something to this effect. Damn you internet for evolving my ideas before I ever got around do acting on the first one.

1. What's your favorite drug store makeup product and your favorite higher-end product?
Lately I have been big into trying new products. I have fallen in love with Maybelliene Volume Express One by One Mascara. I know it's gotten mixed reviews online but I'm in love and will keep buying it till it's discontinued. From higher end products it was harder for me to choose but I always recommend Bliss Lid + Lash Make Up Remover. I will never go back to anything else.
2. Is there one type of product that is your go-to, can't live without?
Lipstick or mascara - lipstick or mascara - lipstick or mascara. Who can choose?
3. What's the best hair product you've ever used?
Can I count the ways I love Bumble + Bumble Surf Spray. I am not one to spend a lot of money on hair products ever but every summer I go through about two bottles of this. Perfect beach hair in 10 minutes... Brilliant!
4. Fess up, what's the worst beauty look you've tried to rock and look back at now with a little shame or apprehension that you actually did that?
I wish I could say I have a look I should just burn all pictures of but I'm not exactly an experimenter with make up never have been. As for hair styles and colors I definitely have a few I would never try again. Should a 15 year old have purple highlights with blonde tips... probably not.
5. When it comes to beauty products, we all use the same basic products. What do you use that helps show off your personal flare and personality?
I'm always wearing a bright nail polish. Currently I'm obsessed with Sephora by OPI in Shopping Frenzy. I also wear bright lipstick whenever I feel like I can pull it off.

Wanderlust & Lipstick - Introduction

I was very surprised when I posted about picking a destination to travel alone to clear my head and have an escape came as a strange concept to so many readers. I got tons of comments and quite a few emails asking why I travel this way, do I ever get uncomfortable, is it safe, where do I begin... It got me to thinking. I need to spread the word. Get to inspiring ladies to get out there and explore. Traveling solo can be a scary proposition. Much of this comes from the dire warnings that other people impress upon a would-be traveler, despite the fact that they may have no personal experience from which to base these warnings. I am here to battle these naysayers with the new series - Wanderlust & Lipstick.

But where to begin. There are so many tips, tricks and pieces of advice that I think are necessary to share but we gotta get you to want to hit the road first so let's just start here...

5 Reasons To Consider Traveling Solo:

1. Freedom. As a solo traveler, you’re the boss. No coordinating agendas, no arguing over where to eat and when, or going to museums you find boring. Sleep late, skip breakfast, take an earlier train than planned, stop for photos, or hang at a cafe all day. No negotiating or compromising necessary.

2. Approachability. Surprisingly you'll meet far more people when you’re on your own. Having even one travel mate makes you more closed off to the people around you. Alone, not only could you get hit on my the cute locals, but friendly people all around become open to the nice girl exploring the city.

3. Instinct. We all have a certain degree of sixth sense, an instinct telling us the good from the bad good and the bad. Trusting this intuition is critical to having a safe journey. It could tell you to go for it when the cute boy in a coffee shop buys you your second cup or to pass on that knock off purse in a back alley. When traveling alone no one is there to distract us from that sense like a friend all too giddy to make new travel friends or the companion tired and grouchy who will say no to everything.

4. Inner Strength. There are countless rewards to traveling solo. There is such a sense of accomplishment that comes from planning, going and returning from your solo adventure. Little else has ever made me feel so proud of myself and I know you'll feel the same.

5. Experience. The lifelong value of solo adventures is indescribable. You'll forever have stories to tell at parties, things to tell future (or current) children, and a place to in the "girl power" hall of fame.

1. Since you started blogging has your image of yourself changed?

This question varies on both end of the spectrum. It helps me greatly most of the time of others it can be a kick in the pants. Seeing so many lovely ladies willing to put their style and bodies out there is empowering yet there is always that element of "I wish I had her style" "If I had her body I would look better" and the list goes on. The up side is that there is a never ending source of encouragement in the blogosphere.
2. Are you self-conscious about any aspect of yourself? If so, do you
go out of your way to avoid it or do you post it/talk about it anyway?

We're all self-conscious. Anyone who says other wise is lying or having a really good day they don't want to ruin being negative. My legs have always been something I don't like which then turns into a weight issue. I'm at a point where it's not something that bothers me on a regular basis. I don't go out of my way to avoid posting on the topic but I certainly don't open up about it. My posts on body image tend to be more open and general.
3. Based on how you are feeling now, what do you think the future
holds in the evolution of your body image?

Body image has peaks and valleys. On the trend of how I feel at this moment I can say that someday soon I could be completely comfortable in my body. Wow - I like that answer. Uncharacteristically optomistic for me.
4. Do you photograph yourself for your blog? If so, how do you feel
about the experience when you're having your picture taken? If you
choose not to post pictures of yourself, what prompted that decision?

I don't photograph myself regularly but I have plans too. The decision not to photograph myself stems more out of time and equipment availability than an avoidance to posting myself. I hope I feel more empowered and comfortable the longer I take pictures of myself, but I also can see the opposite happening. A need to look better, be styled better and soon as the days and number of pictures goes up.
5. What would you want every person who struggles with body image to
take to heart?

Everyone has body image struggles. Post about them or find someone in the blog world or real life who might feel the same way you do. As women especially we keep so much to ourselves assuming people would think we are weak or no strong enough to do things on our own if we admit to struggle. Jump in and find people like you.

Spring Trend Breakdown

In the next few months most of you can tuck all your wool sweaters and peacoats in a box under your bed until next September, if you're in the South that time period probably moves up to sometimes in early March. In the meantime, you're ready to spend your paycheck and don't know where to begin. What stores carry the most popular styles? Where can I find the runway looks for less? I don't have all the answers but here's my take on the Spring trends for 2011 floating around the fashion world.

Hyper Color

Citrus, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine. This isn't referring to your fruit bowl on your kitchen counter. Pantone is the world renowned authority for color. The company has named honeysuckle as the color of the year for a variety of industries. From floor-length silk dresses to cotton shorts, a powerful little punch of color can take any outfit from ordinary to extraordinary. Try pairing a bright satin skirt with a simple black suit coat and the outfit becomes appropriate for a day in the office.

Embrace the Lace

Lace has made its arrival and was on the runways in every form for spring. This delicate fabric isn't reserved for only undergarments anymore. For subtle options, look for pieces as a little detail of a skirt or adorning the back of a shirt. If you like bold, try keeping the different colors of lace in your look to one or two.

Midi is the new Mini

In the fall, leather mini-skirts and tights were the perfect combination. But with the beggining of warmer temperatures, it's time to shed the layers and make the change to simple and comfortable. A cotton shirt or tank top paired with a pleated midi-skirt adds is perfect for any time of day. Try separating the pieces with a wide leather belt to complete the look.

Prints Charming

Designers such as Emilio Pucci or Marc Jacobs know best. The boldness of their designs and experiments with color is truly fascinating. Try a solid color skirt paired with a silk blouse as an easy way to wear this look. Remember that articles of clothing like these speak for themselves. Keep jewelry and accessories to a minimum to avoid cheapening your look. Something as simple as nude pumps will help you stay on the feminine and chic side.

Great White

White has always been the go-to color for spring and summer. It's airy and light. Perfect for the rising temperatures and days spent out in the sun. As a lady in the ATX area, you can never have too many white pieces in your closet. Whether it's the perfect button-down blouse for work, flowy skirt, or denim jeans, stock up on a variety of pieces for spring.

Pants aren't just for the boys

Annie Hall made wearing pants fun for women in Woody Allen's 1977 film. The recent skinny jean craze is finally starting to die down. The Confusing eBay Experience

This is a departure from my usual posts but I wanted to see if anyone else out there had a similar experience and had advice on what the hell I'm supposed to do now....

I put an old computer eBay. Still worked but was a PC I didn't use and was only trying to sell for a couple hundred dollars. I was really confused when the bids for it were way above my Buy It Now price - like $200 over.

Then when bidding was over I got a message that I needed to send them an invoice for the computer. Um why can't they just pay through eBay PayPal like a normal user? So I did that. Just to see what happens.

That's when I started to get the weird emails supposedly from PayPal and eBay. One telling me money had been sent to me through PayPal but I couldn't get it until I shopped them item, the other from eBay telling me that if I didn't ship the item within 24 hours and give a tracking number my eBay account would be suspended.

I put my detective cap on - it kinda looks like Sherlock Holmes hat, from the old versions not the Robert Downey top hat - and tried to figure out what in the H was going on . I checked the email addresses from PayPal and eBay once they said payment was sent. They were definitely fake. I have to give it to these people if I wasn't so used to the eBay - PayPal system I could easily have been fooled. The actual emails looked perfect.

Oh and did I mention that when I checked the shipping address it was to somewhere in Nigeria. Yet the eBay account says it would be shipped to somewhere in Montana.

What do I do now? I tried to report the user to eBay but the website wasn't cooperating. Anyone have any experience with this?

It was a pretty close race in the votes for my alone mind-clearing vacation but the winner turned out to be San Francisco. I was pleasantly surprised. It will probably be next month by the time I get all of my ducks in a row in order to go but I'm looking forward to it. If San Fran ends up being the eventual winner I'll send you all a prize... maybe.

I was also surprised at how many comments and emails I got addressing the fact that I was either brave or crazy for going on a trip alone. Is this really that unusual? I didn't think it was till I posed the question to you guys. I went on my first solo adventure at 15 to NYC. Granted I stayed with my Aunt in the city but I wandered alone most days. I wasn't too adventurous but it was my first taste of independent travel. I was hooked. If you haven't ever traveled alone or you think it's dangerous stop now. Email me or find someone who encourages this act. Get on it now. Can you do that for me?

Now that I have set the act of planning this trip in motion all I need is the perfect outfit for a night alone at an amazing bar with an amazing cocktail. How about something like this?

Spring Wishlist

I am itching for Spring. We had our annual 1/4 inch of snow in the ATX area and I'm over this whole Winter thing.

In the wake of all roads, stores, and schools being closed down for a whole week from the snow storm - that's no sarcasm, we aren't prepared for things like that - I started to compile my Spring must buys.

Has anyone found the OPI Texas collection anywhere? I need every polish in the collection. Even if it's ugly. It's my home and I'm obsessed with the names. They only came out February 2 but I found them. Damn that snow storm, I couldn't do any essential errands.

Tanking A Break

Just letting everyone know that I am going to be a little MIA for the next few days. I'm feeling a little under the weather and my brain is just not coming up with anything to say. How great are these luggage tags? No need to have a stand out suitcase when you have stand out suitcase accessories.

I love my white Apple earbuds but after a long period of time they hurt my ears. Maybe my ear holes are too small or maybe I need take out a strange ear piercing or two, either way an alternative is required. Love this affordable and adorable pair.

My favorite sunglasses. I only have a purple pair right now which aren't as practical or travel friendly as the classic black pair. They look good with everything and in my humble opinion add an instant cool factor to anyone.

I am the girl constantly shoving her legs in her dress because airports are cold. Carrying these socks could make me look a little more classy.

I'm not much of a purse carrier. Most times I take my wallet out of my purse and just take that and my phone into stores and restaurants with me.

I have decided that in 2011 I will expand my clutch collection. It will allow me to carry money, lipstick, my phone and other needed things all in one place without being a big purse to lug around. As a totally ridiculous and unrealistic place to start I am on the hunt for a box clutch. They are trendy and well... pretty. Sometimes those are the things you need.

Before you say it... I know everything looks different. I was working on making a few changes and it didn't really goes as planned. I'll work on it again tonight. For now please forgive the bare blog!

Until last year I have been the worst at picking my own makeup. I was a slave to the girl at the makeup counter. She told me what shades to buy and I did. No second thought. Then I could skim magazines and realize I wasn't confined to these typical shades.

Enter... universally flattering shades. These products should look good on any tone and might add a punch to your makeup bag.

I used to only use a white or pale pink highlighter in the corers of my eye and under my brows but this punch of gold takes that highlighter look from day to night instantly. Match it with a trendy purple and you're set.

I like to take advantage of my 20's having decent skin and being able to wear little makeup if I need too. Mascara, a little blush and gloss and I can run to the store looking like I took the time to get ready. Sheer pink gloss looks good on everyone. Better than chapstick and not as heavy as lipstick.

Now I love black liner, but sometimes a dark cocoa color brown eye liner is better. Lightens the eye and doesn't make it heavy. Won't wash out light skin and won't blend on a darker toned skin. Clinique Quickliner for eyes are one of my favorite eyeliners. I suggest buying one in every color!

Pink blush is amazing. The perfect winter flush. Find the right shade and everyone will think you have perfect skin. I haven't tried this Laura Mercier product but I've heard nothing but good things about all her products. I need to get on it stat.

I ran across an InStyle article about the 10 things every woman should have in her closet. In peaked my interest because I had virtually nothing on the list, and they all made sense. A version or variation would be appropriate for every woman regardless of skin tone, hair color or size.

All in all I thought the list was pretty good. There isn't anything I could think of that would be better or make more sense that wasn't influenced too much by my personal style. Well maybe a white everyday t-shirt. But that's all. A couple years ago I had the goal of getting everything on Nina Garcia's Essential 100 list and failed miserably. 100 is just too many. Though I loved the book. If you don't have it I suggest it. I think this list is much more manageable.

The 70's Are Back In Town

70's style is slowly making it's way into my closet. It suites not only my style but my body type very well but I find it hard to balance "Wow, that's 70's" and "Love the 70's flare in that outfit" (get it flare, cause they 70's were famous for flare plans. I crack myself up)

I think these shoes with a would add a great 70's edge to a modern outfit. Plus I think I could go all day in these babies.

Wanderlust Essentials

Those who know me have no argument that I am the definition of someone with "wanderlust." If I didn't have to have a job (damn bills and no inheritance) I would have no place to live. I would travel from place to place until I have successfully seen the world.

Till then I will have to settle for weekend getaways and long planned out trips to far aways places. Imagining I did have that inheritance in my hot little hand though I would buy one of all these things. Just to make the sweet sense of travel all the more enjoyable.

Hoodies are a necessary evil of traveling. A cardigan is just not always enough warmth and a jacket/coat is unnecessary bulk. Enter Alexander Wang. Designer hoodie with asymmetrical back; yes please.

Remember how 1 second ago I said sometimes a cardigan isn't enough warmth? Well sometimes it is. Especially a gorgeous snuggly one like this.

Traveling dries me out. Gross I know. But my skin doesn't handle changing conditions as much as I believe it should. But this product makes me happy. It's considered all purpose, chapped skin and cuticle cream all in one. Plus of course it's intentional use, hair pomade.

Jewelry, makeup, spare cash or change. These little pouches have a thousand uses. Just so you have a place for everything of course.

I have never used a garment bag. I always think of how glamorous must be to have clothes fancy enough to require one. With a bag like this I think I just may but my regular old clothes in it. It's just too cute to leave at home.

How great is this "Codi" Jacket by Elizabeth and James? The idea of a statement jacket has been appealing to me for a while. Something simple, easy to wear that can be thrown on over your outfit and change the whole look. Throw this jacket over a tank and jeans or maxi dress with a few bangles and you're good to go. Anything goes.

Now this is a bit of an investment I'm not sure I could justify the money for. But I know somewhere out there is a great alternative... now to find it!

Inject Some Color

I took a mental evaluation of my closet the other day and realized I have tons of denim and even more grey. Usually this doesn't bother me. I wear a colored bag or throw on some jewelry; punch things up and get on my way.

Well when you are too tired and too lazy to do those extra steps you look boring. My steps in fixing this is to make 2011 the year of the colored basics. Everything I would usually buy in grey but punched up with some color.

I'm not a big fan of wearing red. I'm so pale it generally makes me look pink. Enter Rust. Yes, rust. Seems gross and pukey but in the right shade it's a good color and can add a punch to a basic day.

Creepy Crawlies

I'm not usually one for strange prints and designs. I often stare at things in Anthropologie with birds and foxes on them and wish I had that kind of style, but I often feel like a unemployed kindergarten teacher when I try. (no offense, some of you ladies pull it off with ease)

This shirt is calling me to though. It's covered in bugs. Yet for being bugs I feel it's whimsy and cute. Who knows... I will have to find it in a store before I purchase it.

I have been on the hunt for the perfect denim jacket for a long time. In my mind it would be a worn in Levi's jacket from the 70's but those seem to be few and far between. In the mean time I am thinking this American Eagle jacket could do...

I rarely walk into an American Eagle these days because it just makes me feel old and nothing ever suites my style, but I have always liked their denim. This jacket is a perfect example of that.

Office Wear

We all know I usually work from home. But since my computer is in jail broken and sad I have no way to keep up with work. I have no choice but to get up and get my tired ass to an office to work on a few projects.

I stare at young girls who have effortless office style without squashing personal style. I am lucky to be able to show up in jeans and a t-shirt without anyone giving me a second look, but I just can't do this. This is my chance to try and be one of "those" girls.

In a dream world I would get up an hour earlier, shower and take my time getting ready until I throw this on and gracefully and with no stress walk out the door.

Now all I need is the $4,000 or so this outfit costs, more sleep at night and less stress. Yep. Then I'd be golden.

Flying In Style

Like all I need to do is get off the plan, touch up my lipstick and I'm ready to hit the town. I start with the best intentions too. I plan a great outfit.
